Ancient Rome is viewed by historians as one of the greatest civilizations ever built. Much of what Western Civilization is today can be attributed to Ancient Rome, including language, politics, religion, and art. When we think of Rome, we think of progress — but progress has to start somewhere less than ideal, and that’s especially true when it comes to imprisonment.

While the concept of imprisonment was generally thought of as inhumane in Ancient Rome, it wasn’t out of the ordinary. And for those prisoners who had to suffer through confinement or punishment, things could get especially awful. From draconian law codes to brutal executions, here’s what it was like for prisoners in Ancient Rome.
