Tragedy struck the Kennedy family in 1999, when John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, died in a plane crash off the coast of Massachusetts. Kennedy, who had gotten his pilot’s license only a year prior to the accident, was at the helm of the Piper Saratoga.
