Following the end of WWII, the United States and the Soviet Union entered into a nearly 50-year period of political tension. The Cold War is best remembered for the Space Race, espionage, and the increasing possibility of nuclear war.

But there was more going on than what the public saw on their TV screens. Fears of a nuclear apocalypse led governments towards some weird and morally suspect ideas during the Cold War. Experiments involving radiation, hallucinogenic drugs, and brainwashing were all part of the norm. Here are the most messed up things that happened during the Cold War.
