Although his time as president was brief, Abraham Lincoln cemented a legacy as one of the greatest leaders the country has ever known. On April 14, 1865, almost immediately after the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and the end of the Civil War, Lincoln was assassinated while attending a play at Ford’s Theatre with his wife.

The president had been shot by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth, and on the morning of April 15th, 1865, Lincoln was pronounced dead.
